Welcome Back to School!
We are all so excited to be back at school! We have had a super week and a half so far and look forward to a great year ahead of us.
Some notes for this year:
We will have library every Thursday as our schedule allows. Please make sure library books are kept in a safe place and returned when you are finished with them.
Please do not bring toys or devices to school unless absolutely necessary. We would not like anything to get lost or stolen and they can sometimes be a distraction to our learning.
We don't send a lot of homework home, but if students do not finish something, it will be sent home with them at the end of the week to be completed at home. Check the blog for any notifications of finish up work. Students are asked to be reading 20 minutes a night and practice their basic math facts as much as possible.
This Week:
- we had a great week coming back and getting to know each other! We are learning each other's names and have talked about the importance of names. Today we were able to present to the class about our names- everyone did such a great job! We are reading some books about names and we are creating some graffiti name art for our visual journals
- we also started talking about what scientists do and how they approach problems. We learned about the design thinking process (identify, brainstorm, prototype, test). We talked about the invention of schools and our problem was: What kind of school would we build? We read the book 'If I Built a School' and then set to work brainstorming and coming up with plans for our school. We then tried building our schools with Lego and blocks. We talked about using materials and how that might change out plans!
- in language arts we talked about what good readers do. We are starting our first novel study The Summer from the Black Lagoon and practicing reading responses and recall strategies for when we read.
Next Week:
- library will start on Thursday
- Meet the Teacher night will be on Thursday night 4:30-6:30. Come and say hi!
- Me Museum is due on Thursday! See the blue form that went home. We also talked about it in class today and showed and example. Please do not send breakable items- maybe take a picture and email it to me and I can print it, or print a picture at home.
- Terry Fox Run Sept. 12 at 9:00am. Students are encouraged to bring in Toonies for Terry to support cancer research. If we reach our fundraising goal of $1150, we’ll celebrate the following week with a special “Wear Your Favourite Sports Swag” day!
